We feel lucky to live adjacent to a resource as wonderful as the Wolf. The river offers the perfect destination for canoeists, kayakers and rafting. People often refer to the Wolf by its various sections: Section I-Quietwater paddlers most often use this stretch between Lily and Hollister, taking care to scout and perhaps portage the few Class II rapids along the 15-mile route.

Section II- with its four Class II rapids, this section is the perfect learning environment for beginning whitewater paddlers. The section called “Long II” is an 8-mile stretch from Hollister to Langlade. “Short II” is the three-mile final segment, beginning at the Irrigation Ditch landing and ending at the Langlade bridge.

Section III-A popular segment of the river for whitewater paddlers, the section III put-in is at the Ranger Station in Langlade. If you have the entire day, the 10-mile run to Buettner’s Wild Wolf Inn (Gilmore’s Mistake Rapid) is enjoyable. This stretch is commonly referred to as “Long III.” The last three-mile segment called “Short Three” starts at Herb’s Landing on County Highway M and ends at the Wild Wolf Inn.

Herb’s Landing on County Highway M is open for public access during the regular fishing season. Please be mindful that both landings-County Highway M and the Wild Wolf Inn- are private, though the Buettners allow access to boaters. At Herb’s Landing, please do not block the access point for rafters. When you are visiting the Wild Wolf Inn, please follow the posted instructions-cars need to be parked in the lower lot and boats carried to and from the vehicles. Let Buettners know you appreciate their generosity when it comes to boater access.

Section IV-The most challenging whitewater section of the Wolf begins at Otter Slide Rapids and ends at Big Smoky Falls. Access is controlled and permits must be purchased in advance from the Menominee India Reservation. Cost of purchasing a permit at Big Smoky Falls Rafting is $25, which includes a shuttle to the put- in. Reservations need to be made a day in advance, by calling 715-799-3359.

Ordinances prohibit aluminum cans or glass bottles on the river. Please help us keep the Wolf a pristine Wisconsin resource.
