The Wolf River Territory has some of the best mountain biking and hiking in the county. With the Nicolet National Forest all around us, take your pick from scenic logging road rides, hot singletracks, lung pumping climbs and technical downhill’s.

Just south of Hwy 64 on Hwy 55 you can park on Van Alstine Road, to access the Nicolet trails. A new technical trail is being constructed, called the Nicolet-Roche. A group of local volunteers have taken on the project and it’s awesome! At this time however, we are not allowed to print maps or sign the trail, but if you ask any local fat-tire enthusiast, they’ll point you in the right direction. You’ll also find trails at other area businesses, which are open to the public. One such trail system is located just behind Bear Paw Outdoor Adventure Resort. Boulder Lake also has nice trails around it.

Hiking is another great activity in the area. One such popular hike is the Wolf River Trail. This 3-mile trail runs along the west bank of the river, winding through the beautiful forest. The trailhead is located at the DNR parking lot on County Hwy M, which is the south side of the highway and the trail head starts to the north of the highway.

The Cathedral of the Pines is another must see. Just north of Lakewood you’ll find one of the last old growth pine stands in northern Wisconsin. Amid these giant trees, Great Blue Heron return each year to raise their young. Take Highway 32 through Lakewood; go west (left) on Archibald Lake Road to Cathedral Drive. This road is not plowed in the winter months.

Jones Springs-Fanny Lake is another beautiful area. This 2,000-acre non-motorized area in the Nicolet National Forest offers great hiking opportunities. There are four loops for a total of 11 miles of trail. From Langlade, take Hwy 64 east to County Highway T. Go north (left) for Forest Road 2938 (Fanny Lake Road).
